Getting a "can't verify the developer" warning?

If you see a warning on first launch, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway". Open source software usually isn't signed with an Apple developer certificate, which is normal.

Clicking "Download" takes you to a source confirmation page first; the download starts after confirmation.

Install guide

Windows

Download MailspringSetup.exe, double-click to run, and follow the wizard to install.

macOS

After extracting, drag Mailspring.app into the "Applications" folder. If you see "cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified" on first launch, go to "System Settings" > "Privacy & Security" and click "Open Anyway", or right-click the app and select "Open".

For Apple Silicon (M1/M2 etc.), download Mailspring-AppleSilicon.zip;
For Intel chips, download Mailspring.zip.

Linux

Debian/Ubuntu (x64): Download mailspring-1.23.0-amd64.deb and install with sudo dpkg -i.
Debian/Ubuntu (arm64): Download mailspring-1.23.0-arm64.deb and install the same way.
Fedora/RHEL (x64): Download mailspring-1.23.0-0.1.x86_64.rpm and install with sudo rpm -ivh.
Fedora/RHEL (arm64): Download mailspring-1.23.0-0.1.aarch64.rpm and install the same way.

Note: Mailspring-1.23.0-full.nupkg and RELEASES are used by the auto-update mechanism; regular users do not need to install them manually.

Is Mailspring free?

Yes, Mailspring is open source under the GPL-3.0 license, and all basic features are completely free. Mailspring Pro is also available as a subscription, which unlocks advanced features like email tracking and read receipts.

Which operating systems are supported?

Officially, Windows, macOS, and Linux are supported. This page provides the Windows exe, macOS zip, and Linux deb/rpm packages; please choose according to your system.

How is email data stored? Is it sent to the cloud?

The email sync engine runs entirely locally. Your email account passwords and email content are not sent to the cloud, so you can use it with confidence.

How do I update to a new version?

You can download the latest version from the official website or this site and install it over the existing one. Windows and macOS usually support in-app automatic updates. Linux users can manually download the new package and install it over the old version.

Can I customize the appearance or extend functionality?

Yes. Mailspring supports themes and plugins. You can find resources created by community developers from the official community or GitHub, or you can write your own.
