Installation Guide

Choose an Installer

Flow Launcher provides two official installation methods:

  • Installer version (recommended): Download Flow-Launcher-Setup.exe. It works on Windows 10 and later; run it and follow the prompts to complete the installation.
  • Portable version: Download Flow-Launcher-Portable.zip, extract it, and run the executable directly. No installation is required, and user data is stored locally by default.

Other files such as .nupkg and RELEASES are for developers or the automatic update mechanism; regular users do not need to download them.

Installation Steps (Installer Version)

  1. Download Flow-Launcher-Setup.exe from the official Releases page or this site.
  2. Double-click to run the installer.
  3. On first install, Windows SmartScreen may show "Windows protected your PC" because the installer is not code-signed. If you downloaded it from an official source, click "More info" > "Run anyway" to continue.
  4. Follow the wizard to complete the installation. After startup, you can press Alt+Space to bring up the search window by default.

Installation Steps (Portable Version)

  1. Download Flow-Launcher-Portable.zip.
  2. Extract it to any directory, e.g., D:\FlowLauncher.
  3. Open the extracted folder and double-click Flow.Launcher.exe to start.
  4. On first launch, you may also see a SmartScreen warning; handle it in the same way as above.

Common Issues

  • Doesn't work on macOS or Linux? Flow Launcher only supports Windows. Do not install it on other systems.
  • How to update? Type check for update in the search window or check for updates in Settings. For the portable version, download the new archive and overwrite the old files.
  • Does it require .NET? The installer version includes the required runtime, and so does the portable version. No additional installation is needed.

Is Flow Launcher free?

Yes. Flow Launcher is released under the MIT open-source license and is completely free, with no payment or subscription required.

Which operating systems are supported?

Only Windows 10 and later versions are supported. macOS, Linux, and mobile platforms are not supported.

What should I do if Windows shows a security warning during installation?

Because the installer is not code-signed, SmartScreen may warn about an unknown publisher. Please ensure you downloaded it from the official GitHub Releases or this site, then click "More info" > "Run anyway" to continue the installation.

How do I update to a new version?

Type `check for update` in the search window or check for updates in Settings. For the portable version, you can download the latest archive and overwrite the old files; your user data will be preserved.

Does it support Chinese search?

Yes. Flow Launcher has a built-in Chinese language pack and supports pinyin search (for example, typing "wb" can match "微博" (Weibo)).
