Getting a "can't verify the developer" warning?

If you see a warning on first launch, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway". Open source software usually isn't signed with an Apple developer certificate, which is normal.

Clicking "Download" takes you to a source confirmation page first; the download starts after confirmation.

Risk notice

This software is at an early version (0.5.0) and some features may be unstable. First use requires downloading several gigabytes of model files, which takes up significant disk space. Global dictation on macOS requires accessibility permissions, so grant them with caution.

Who it's for

  • Content creators and podcasters who need offline voice cloning and generation
  • Writers and developers who want to boost productivity with voice input
  • Users who care about data privacy and want to run voice AI locally
  • Developers who need to add voice replies to AI agents (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor)
  • Voice-over enthusiasts who need multilingual TTS and sound effects

Who it's not for

  • Users who expect zero configuration and don't want to download models
  • Users with low-end computers who are sensitive to GPU resource usage
  • Users who need official precompiled Linux packages (currently only macOS and Windows are supported)
  • Commercial users who demand perfectly natural intonation and emotional expression at a top tier

Install guide

Installation Guide

macOS (Apple Silicon)

  • Download Voicebox_0.5.0_aarch64.dmg (recommended)
  • Open the DMG and drag Voicebox into the Applications folder
  • If you see "cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer" on first launch, right-click the app and select "Open", or click "Open Anyway" in System Settings → Privacy & Security

macOS (Intel)

  • Download Voicebox_0.5.0_x64.dmg
  • Installation steps are the same as above

Windows

  • Download Voicebox_0.5.0_x64-setup.exe (recommended) or Voicebox_0.5.0_x64_en-US.msi
  • Run the installer and follow the prompts to complete installation
  • On first launch, CUDA dependencies may need to be installed (for NVIDIA GPU users); the app will download them automatically

General Notes

  • TTS/STT models need to be downloaded on first use. Make sure your network connection is stable (models are large, and download time depends on your connection)
  • For global dictation, macOS requires granting "Accessibility" and "Input Monitoring" permissions; the app will guide you through this

FAQ

Is Voicebox free?

Yes. Voicebox is open-source under the MIT license and completely free to use. All features (TTS, STT, cloning, dictation, etc.) have no paid restrictions.

Which operating systems are supported?

Currently, official installers are provided for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows (x64). Linux precompiled binaries are not yet available; you would need to build from source.

Does Voicebox need an internet connection?

After installation, the core features run entirely locally without needing the internet. An internet connection is required when downloading models for the first time; afterward, you can use it offline.

How do I update Voicebox?

The app checks for updates (requires internet). You can also download the latest version from the GitHub Releases page and install it over the existing installation. Model updates are done through the in-app model management feature.

What should I do if macOS says "cannot be opened" when launching?

This is macOS's protection notice for unsigned apps. You can click "Open Anyway" in System Settings → Privacy & Security, or right-click the app icon and select "Open" and confirm.
