Getting a "can't verify the developer" warning?

If you see a warning on first launch, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway". Open source software usually isn't signed with an Apple developer certificate, which is normal.

Clicking "Download" takes you to a source confirmation page first; the download starts after confirmation.

Risk notice

This software is a single-user, local-first application with no multi-user permission boundaries. Do not expose the HTTP service to untrusted networks. Custom JDBC drivers are executable code and should only be installed from trusted sources. Losing the encryption key (encryption.key) will make saved database passwords and AI API keys impossible to decrypt. Additionally, the official information does not clearly state an open-source license, so please confirm the license terms before downloading.

Who it's for

  • Developers and DBAs who need to work with multiple databases at once
  • Data analysts who want to generate or optimize SQL using natural language
  • Teams that prefer a local-first setup with data staying on their own machines
  • Users looking for a free alternative to commercial database clients
  • Data teams that need data import/export and basic visualization features

Who it's not for

  • Organizations that require multi-user accounts and team permission management (the community edition is a single-user local app)
  • Users who want a hosted AI service out of the box without configuring their own model (the community edition requires bring-your-own model)
  • Users who don't want to manage encryption keys or worry that losing the key will make saved credentials unrecoverable
  • Teams that need commercial support or enterprise-grade governance features (the commercial edition may be more suitable)

Install guide

Download the file that matches your operating system and processor architecture.

Windows

  • Download Chat2DB-Community-5.3.2.msi, double-click to run, and follow the prompts to complete the installation. Once launched, you can connect to databases.

macOS

  • Apple Silicon (arm64): Download Chat2DB-Community-5.3.2-arm64.dmg
  • Intel (x64): Download Chat2DB-Community-5.3.2-x64.dmg

Open the DMG file and drag the app into the Applications folder. If you see a warning that the app cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer, right-click the app and choose Open, or allow it in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

Linux (Linux is not listed on the official supported platforms, but installation files are available in the download directory)

  • x64 architecture: Download Chat2DB-Community-5.3.2-x86_64.AppImage (or Chat2DB-Community-5.3.2-amd64.deb, Chat2DB-Community-5.3.2-x86_64.rpm)
  • arm64 architecture: Download Chat2DB-Community-5.3.2-arm64.AppImage (or Chat2DB-Community-5.3.2-arm64.deb)

For AppImage, run chmod +x Chat2DB-Community-5.3.2-x86_64.AppImage first, then execute it; for .deb use sudo dpkg -i or sudo apt install; for .rpm use sudo rpm -ivh or sudo dnf install.

Verifying files All packages can be verified against the SHA256SUMS file in the same directory: run sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS in the download directory (on macOS use shasum -a 256 -c).

First-run notes

  • Chat2DB Community is a single-user local application. Do not bind the HTTP service to a non-loopback address or expose it to untrusted networks.
  • The app generates an encryption key to protect database passwords and AI API keys. Please back up ~/.config/chat2db-community/encryption.key (the path may differ on Windows). Losing this file will make saved credentials impossible to decrypt.

FAQ

Is Chat2DB Community free?

Yes, Chat2DB Community is free and runs locally. The commercial editions (Pro/Enterprise) offer additional features such as hosted AI and multi-user support, and are sold separately.

Which operating systems are supported?

Windows and macOS are officially supported (with dmg and msi installers), and the download directory also includes AppImage, deb, and rpm files for Linux. macOS versions are split between Apple Silicon and Intel; download according to your architecture.

How do I enable the AI features? Do I need to register separately?

The AI assistant in the community edition requires you to bring your own model (BYOM). Configure the model API inside the app. It does not include a hosted AI service, and no Chat2DB account registration is needed.

How do I update to a new version?

Download the new version installer from GitHub Releases and install it over the existing installation. Make sure to keep the encryption key file (e.g., `~/.config/chat2db-community/encryption.key`) so that saved passwords remain decryptable.

What should I do if I'm prompted for an encryption key when connecting to a database?

The desktop version creates the key file automatically on first launch. If you start Web/headless mode manually, run `./script/security/init-community-encryption-key.sh` first to generate the key, and specify its location via an environment variable or argument. Please back up this file.
