Getting a "can't verify the developer" warning?

If you see a warning on first launch, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway". Open source software usually isn't signed with an Apple developer certificate, which is normal.

Clicking "Download" takes you to a source confirmation page first; the download starts after confirmation.

Risk notice

Important: The macOS build is unsigned, so you need to manually bypass Gatekeeper to run it. The Windows build may also trigger a SmartScreen warning. Additionally, yt-dlp must be installed separately on macOS. Please download only from official GitHub Releases or reputable package managers.

Who it's for

  • Users who need to download videos or audio for offline viewing
  • Users who want to download entire playlists in batch
  • Users who need subtitles or want to trim clips
  • Users who prefer open-source, ad-free downloaders
  • Users across Windows, Linux, and macOS

Who it's not for

  • Users who prefer command-line tools like yt-dlp
  • Users who require signed apps and are unwilling to bypass system warnings manually
  • Users who do not want to install additional dependencies such as yt-dlp on macOS

Install guide

Choose the package for your system:

Windows

  • Recommended: YTDownloader_Win.exe (allows custom install location) or YTDownloader_Win.msi (uses default location).
  • Double-click the installer and follow the instructions.
  • If Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC", click "More info" and then "Run anyway".

Linux

  • AppImage (recommended): Download YTDownloader_Linux.AppImage, run chmod +x YTDownloader_Linux.AppImage in the terminal, then double-click to launch. AppImageLauncher is recommended for integration.
  • Debian/Ubuntu: Download YTDownloader_Linux.deb and install with sudo dpkg -i YTDownloader_Linux.deb.
  • Fedora/RHEL: Download YTDownloader_Linux.rpm and install with sudo rpm -i YTDownloader_Linux.rpm.
  • Alternatively, install via Flatpak: flatpak install flathub io.github.aandrew_me.ytdn
  • Or via Snap: sudo snap install ytdownloader

macOS

sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/YTDownloader.app

  • Apple Silicon (M1/M2 etc.): Download YTDownloader_Mac_arm64.dmg
  • Intel chip: Download YTDownloader_Mac_x64.dmg
  • Open the DMG and drag YTDownloader.app into the Applications folder.
  • Since the app is unsigned, macOS will block the first launch. Open Terminal and run:
  • You also need to install yt-dlp: brew install yt-dlp

FAQ

Is this software free?

Yes. YtDownloader is open-source software released under the GPL-3.0 license, and it is free to use.

Which sites are supported?

It is built on yt-dlp and supports hundreds of sites, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and more. See the yt-dlp supported sites list for the full set.

What operating systems are supported?

Windows, Linux, and macOS are supported. Each platform has its own package, and macOS has separate builds for Intel and Apple Silicon.

How do I update to the latest version?

The Linux AppImage supports auto-update. For other versions, download the latest installer from GitHub Releases and update manually. If installed via a package manager (like Chocolatey, Scoop, Winget, Flatpak, or Snap), use the corresponding update command.

What if macOS says the app cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified?

This happens because the app is unsigned. Open Terminal and run `sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/YTDownloader.app`, then try again. Also make sure yt-dlp is installed.
