Getting a "can't verify the developer" warning?

If you see a warning on first launch, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway". Open source software usually isn't signed with an Apple developer certificate, which is normal.

Clicking "Download" takes you to a source confirmation page first; the download starts after confirmation.

Risk notice

macOS 0.11.1 is signed and notarized with a Developer ID; the Windows preview is currently an unsigned build, so running it directly may trigger SmartScreen or other security warnings. In addition, full cleanup functionality requires granting "Full Disk Access" or using administrator privileges; please weigh the trade-offs.

Install guide

macOS

Download Burrow-0.11.1.zip from the releases page (for macOS 14+).
After unzipping, drag Burrow.app into the Applications folder.
Double-click to run. If you see a warning that the app cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer, right-click Burrow.app, choose "Open", and confirm again. (Version 0.11.0+ is signed and notarized, so this is unlikely.)
To clean system caches, enable Burrow in "System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access", or use "Scan as Administrator".

Homebrew installation is recommended:

Windows Preview

There are currently no Windows installer files in the release assets. The Windows preview must be built from source; see the documentation in the project's windows/ directory and run build-release.ps1 with the .NET 8 SDK to generate an installer. appcast.xml is the Sparkle update feed and does not need to be downloaded manually.

FAQ

Is Burrow free and open-source?

Yes, Burrow is MIT-licensed, completely free, and the code is hosted on GitHub. Both the stable macOS version and the Windows preview are open source.

What operating systems are supported?

macOS 14+ is the stable version; Windows 10/11 is a preview that must currently be built from source, with no ready-made installers available.

Do I need to install the engine or command-line tools separately?

No. The macOS version bundles the MIT-licensed burrow-engine, which works out of the box. When building from source, if the engine is missing, it falls back to a system-installed mo.

How do I update Burrow?

For the macOS version installed via Homebrew, use `brew upgrade`. Direct downloads include the Sparkle update mechanism, which will prompt you when a signed new version is available. The Windows preview does not currently have automatic updates.

How do I use the AI agent feature?

Configure the Burrow MCP server in an MCP-compatible client (such as Claude Code or Cursor). On macOS the command is `/Applications/Burrow.app/Contents/MacOS/Burrow --mcp`; if installed via Homebrew, `burrow mcp` also works. After that, AI can query system status through read-only tools, or perform cleanup and optimization operations with your authorization.
