Getting a "can't verify the developer" warning?

If you see a warning on first launch, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway". Open source software usually isn't signed with an Apple developer certificate, which is normal.

Clicking "Download" takes you to a source confirmation page first; the download starts after confirmation.

Risk notice

This software requires macOS 26+ and Apple Silicon, which is a relatively high system-version requirement. It also uses Apple private APIs, which may affect system stability or cause compatibility issues in future system updates. Known limitation: Dwindle layout group information is not restored after restart. Official releases are signed and notarized, but installation via third-party packages (such as some Nix packages) may not preserve the signature.

Installation Guide

OmniWM currently supports macOS 26+ (Tahoe) and Apple Silicon. Please verify that your system meets these requirements first.

Download Files

Download the following files from this page:

OmniWM-v0.5.9.zip: Main application installer (macOS, for Apple Silicon)
GhosttyKit.xcframework-v0.5.9.zip: Optional dependency for the quake/sticky terminal feature (recommended on this site; download it as well if you need this feature)

Installation Steps

Unzip OmniWM-v0.5.9.zip to get OmniWM.app.
Drag OmniWM.app into the Applications folder (/Applications).
Open System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Mission Control and enable Displays have separate Spaces (if not already enabled).
Log out and log back in to macOS (only needed if you just enabled the above option).
Launch OmniWM. On first run, you will be prompted to grant Accessibility permissions. Allow it in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility.
If you need to use the system Hyper trigger key, grant Input Monitoring permission in System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts.

FAQ

Getting a warning that the app "cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer"? Official releases are notarized by Apple, so this usually shouldn't appear. If it does, click "Open Anyway" in System Settings > Privacy & Security.
Quake terminal not working? Make sure you have downloaded and correctly installed GhosttyKit.xcframework-v0.5.9.zip. See the project documentation for the exact installation path.

Is OmniWM free software?

Yes. OmniWM is permanently free, with no subscription, no feature paywall, and no trial limitations.

Which macOS versions and hardware are supported?

Requires macOS 26+ (Tahoe) and Apple Silicon (M-series chips). Intel Macs are not supported.

How do I update to a new version?

OmniWM checks for updates at launch (at most once per day) and shows a prompt if a new version is available. Updates are manual: you can download from GitHub Releases, or run `brew upgrade omniwm` in the terminal (if installed via Homebrew).

Do I need to disable SIP?

No. Official OmniWM releases are developer-signed and notarized by Apple, so you don't need to disable System Integrity Protection (SIP).

What permissions does OmniWM require?

Accessibility permission (for controlling windows); if you use the system Hyper trigger key, Input Monitoring permission is also required. You will be prompted to grant these on first launch.
